Police Officer Peter E.C. Jerving was shot and killed in the line of duty as he attempted to apprehend an armed robbery suspect at 1:16 am near the 2700 block of South 14th Street. Officer Jerving and his partner located the suspect and engaged in a short foot pursuit. Officer Jerving’s partner was able to catch the suspect and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the suspect retrieved a firearm from his waistband and fired rounds at Officer Jerving as he approached to assist his partner make the arrest. Officer Jerving was struck by the gunfire and despite being wounded returned fire.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Unfortunately, Officer Jerving succumbed to his wounds at Froedtert Hospital despite lifesaving efforts from his partner and Firefighters/Paramedics on scene.
Officer Jerving had served with the Milwaukee Police Department for 4 years. He is survived by his parents and six siblings.
